Der Krieg und der Baustil der 1950er- und 60er-Jahre haben Saarbrücken nachhaltig gezeichnet. Sie ist heute eine spröde Schönheit, mit Ecken und Kanten, Herz und Charakter.

An den Ufern der Saar drängen sich die unterschiedlichsten Stadtteile und Quartiere. Rings um das Schloss, einer Mischung aus barockem Repräsentationsbau und moderner Glasarchitektur und der Ludwigskirche, dem Wahrzeichen der Stadt und eine der bedeutendsten evangelischen barocken Kirchenbauten Deutschlands, residierten einst die Grafen und Fürsten von Nassau-Saarbrücken.

Am Schlossplatz befindet sich auch das Museum für die Geschichte des Saarlandes und der deutsch-französischen Grenzregion. Zum Museum gehört die Unterirdische Saarbrücker Burg mit Schießkammer, Wehranlagen, Ballhaus, Geheimgang, Verlies, Kasematten und Funden vom Saarbrücker Schlossfelsen.

Am südlichen Stadtrand, kurz hinter dem Deutsch-Französischen Garten, grenzt Saarbrücken an Frankreich.

Im Stadtteil St. Johann konzentrieren sich Handel und Gewerbe, Kunst und Kultur. Im Osten wartet das quirlige und bunte Multi-Kulti-Szene-Quartier Nauwieser Viertel auf seine Besucher.

Public transport

Regionalbahnen fahren als Direktverbindung zwischen Metz und Saarbrücken häufig. Die Fahrzeit beträgt ca. 1 Stunde.

Directions

Für Radwanderer gibt es zwischen Metz und Saarbrücken Departementsstraßen (Routes departementales) über etwa 75 km.

Mit dem Auto fährt man auf der A4 etwa 78 km. Wer Mautgebühren sparen will, fährt über die Departementsstraße D603 etwa 83 km.
