Amalfi and Ravello are two historically and culturally significant places that for centuries either allied, competed, or even went to war against each other. Many architectural monuments (e.g., mills, large churches, palazzi) still show how densely populated and economically advanced this region was.
We start in Amalfi from the Piazza Duomo heading north along the main street Via Lorenzo di Amalfi. After about 300 m, shortly after Piazza Spirito Santo, we ascend right over the stairway Salita dei Patroni and follow the nearly flat path Via Leone Comite Orso uphill. After around 300 m, at a Marian image and a stately building on the right, our stairway ascends half-right through a house. It soon winds upward and then passes under overhanging cliffs with bizarre stalactite formations. As soon as houses appear, we turn sharply right at a fork. Further up, we go under a vault. After crossing a small street, we reach a beautiful terrace with a water point, the church of S. Giovanni (original core from 12th century), and the "Bar Blu" in Pontone. We now go eastward under the church tower and immediately turn left onto the stairway. After passing under two houses near a stairway rising half-left, we turn right onto the narrower Via dei Precci descending (signpost "Ravello/Amalfi"). Later
