The Troisvierges junction

In 1866 the first trains arrived in Troisvierges from Luxemburg city in the south. Soon after, they began to serve Gouvy and Spa as well. With the arrival of the Fen-Rail in 1889 the station expanded to become a junction. The modern world had finally arrived in this village of farming and pilgrimage. There was work, and with it came wealth. But on the 2nd of August 1914, German troops marched in; Troisvierges was the first locality in neutral Luxemburg. By the mid 1930s, rail travel was already in decline, and after the Second World War the Fen-Rail closed down. Yet the war years had served to strengthen the Luxembourgers’ relationship to their “Lëtzebuergesch” language and roots.
