After centuries as a relevant regional market-place and trading centre, the end of the 19th saw St. Vith develop into the most important junction town on the Fen-Rail. Unfortunately the success of its rail connections proved fatal to the town in World War II. Seen as strategic infrastructure, not only the rail facilities but also the entire town was flattened by saturation bombing over Christmas 1944. Only the Büchel Tower survived upright to symbolize the “never give up” spirit typical of the townspeople of St. Vith. Today the town is a vital centre in the south of the German-speaking Community. With their self-confident and open character, the locals ensure that the values of their pastoral life, language and culture remain relevant in a new century. Read more...
