Der Fermasee ist ein Baggersee. Zur Kies- und Sandgewinnung wurde vor Jahrzehnten ein Altarm des Rheines ausgebaggert und der Fermasee entstand. Zum Schutz, vor allem der Vogelwelt, ist auf dem See das Bootfahren und Tauchen nicht erlaubt. Im südöstlichen Bereich ist das Baden gestattet, dort gibt es auch einen Parkplatz. Die Badesaison geht vom 15.4.-15.10. eines jeden Jahres.
Ein bei der Stadtverwaltung Rheinstetten erhältliches Informationsblatt („Naturschutzgebiet Altrhein Neuburgweier“) informiert über ökologische Besonderheiten, erklärt die bewegte Geschichte der vom Rhein immer wieder veränderten Landschaft und informiert auch darüber, was im Schutzgebiet erlaubt ist und was unterlassen werden sollte.
