Die Talsperre dient dem Hochwasserschutz und der Niedrigwasseraufhöhung. Bedingt durch diese Nutzung sind Freizeitaktivitäten - außer Angeln - an und auf ihr nicht gestattet. Dennoch ist die Weidatalsperre ein beliebtes Ausflugsziel. Rund um die Talsperre Weida führen verschiedene Wander- und Radwege. Einen schönen Ausblick auf die Weidatalsperre und Schloss Burgk hat man vom Saaleturm Burgk.
