Im See selbst liegt eine Insel aus Schieferblockwerk, ungefähr 50 Meter im Durchmesser. Der Sandessee ist damit einer der wenigen Südtiroler Bergseen mit einer Insel. Bis zu 15 Meter tief reicht das Wasser, die Messung wurde bereits 1973 durch den bekannten Wanderbuchautor Hanspaul Menara zusammen mit P. Eisendle vorgenommen. Am Ufer des 210 m langen und 150 m breiten Sees liegt die bereits 1892 von der Alpenvereinssektion Magdeburg erbaute Tribulaunhütte.
