Sirok közelében, a Darnó hegy délkeleti erdős lejtőjén különleges természeti látnivalóra bukkanhatunk.

A buja környezetben fekvő, változó vízállású tó pár méteres mélységű, lefolyástalan riolittufa-medencében fekszik. Különlegessége a tó közepén található tőzegmohaláp ritka tőzegmohafajokkal. Mindezt kivételes módon cseres- és gyertyános-tölgyes erdő veszi körül.

A speciális mikroklíma-szükségletű tőzegmohák hazánkban nagyon ritkák. A tó kizárólag csapadékból nyeri vízutánpótlását, ezért az itt látható természeti állapot nagyban függ az évszaktól és szárazságtól. A Nyírjes-tó oxigénhiányos üledékrétegei – más tőzeglápokhoz hasonlóan – számos, a múlt évezredekben lerakódott virágport őriznek, ami a kutatók számára kivételes betekintést enged a tavat körülvevő erdők kb. 10 ezer évet felölelő változásaiba.

A vizsgálatok szerint a jégkorszaktól kezdődően sűrű fenyvesek uralták a tájat, amit a melegedéssel fokozatosan uralt vissza a bükk, majd a tölgy. A lápban megőrződtek a jégkorszakból visszamaradt, Észak-Európára jellemző fajok is. Több sásféle, vízi lágyszárú és rovar csak itt található meg a Mátra területén. A tó a nevét is az itt megmaradt molyhos nyírről kapta, amely Izland fő erdőalkotó fafaja. A láp több méter vastagságban vízzel átitatott talaja extrém savas, 4,5 pH-értékével és tápanyagszegény vizével olyan élettér, melyet csak bizonyos fajok képesek elviselni.
