Lac de Codole, at an altitude of 108 m, is a biodiversity oasis created in 1984 to supply the Balagne region with drinking and agricultural water. This 80-hectare Natura 2000 site is home to a wide variety of avian and aquatic fauna, with richly diversified habitats.
Lake Codole, located 108 meters above sea level on the Regino river, is a veritable oasis of biodiversity in the heart of the maquis. This dammed lake, commissioned in 1984 and with a reservoir capacity of 6.985 million cubic meters of water, was created to supply the Balagne region with drinking and agricultural water. Covering an area of 80 hectares, it is surrounded by a luxuriant and varied natural environment, offering refuge to a multitude of animal and plant species.
The lake's littoral zones are dominated by dense scrubland to the north, while the western shores are lined with numerous reeds and a thick riparian zone composed mainly of alders, willows and poplars. These varied habitats create a rich and diverse ecosystem. The rocky surroundings and lake shore offer numerous vantage points for observation.
The lake is home to remarkable birdlife. Many birds, including majestic birds of prey such as peregrine falcons and ospreys, can be observed. The surrounding scrubland is also home to a wide variety of avifauna, including Sardinian, Pitchou and Melanocephalus warblers.
As for the aquatic fauna, the dam is populated by numerous species of fish. Carp, rotenglet, roach, black bass and perch thrive here, offering anglers many opportunities. Rainbow trout are also released every year, although their presence is more noticeable near the Reginu river inlet. Eels, although classified as vulnerable, are also present in abundance.
Lake Codole is not only a popular holiday destination, but also a Natura 2000 area, underlining its ecological importance and the need to preserve its biodiversity. Conservation and sustainable management efforts ensure that this lake continues to provide a rich and protected habitat for the species that live there, while offering a magnificent natural space for visitors.
