Die beiden Seen, Poppelsee und Kaltenbachsee, sind Flößerseen aus vergangenen Zeiten. Sie wurden von den Enztal-Flößern um das Jahr 1750 angelegt und hatten damals mit ihren großen Wassermengen große Bedeutung.
Die aufgestauten Seen wurden früher genutzt, um zu Flößen zusammengebundene Baumstämme ins Tal und weiter über Enz, Neckar und Rhein bis zum Bestimmungsort in den Niederlanden zu bringen. Die beiden Seen sind heutzutage eine echte Idylle und ein lohnendes Ausflugsziel für Wanderer.
