Dieser sagenumwobene Hochmoorsee liegt in einem Naturschutzgebiet zwischen Schönwald und Schonach. Typisch ist, dass der See weder Zu- noch Ablauf hat.

Auf den moorigen Feuchtflächen rund um den tintenschwarzen und fast kreisrunden See wachsen Krüppelkiefern und seltene Pflanzen wie Wollgras, Binsen, Seggen, Moosbeere, Fieberkraut, Fettklee, Erika und Sonnentau. Sein dunkles Wasser scheint unergründlich tief. Der Seegrund ist vollständig vermoort. Bereits in 60 cm Tiefe beginnt eine erste Schlammschicht, ohne dass man danach einen festen Boden erreichen kann. Der See liegt direkt am Westweg, bzw. der Westweg geht mitten durch das Naturschutzgebiet. Im direkten Bereich des Sees geht der Weg über Holzstege und entlang des Weges laden Ruhebänke zum Rasten und Verweilen in der Natur ein.
