Der Alpsee liegt eingebettet in der bewaldeten Berglandschaft des Ostallgäus. Er gehört zu den saubersten, aber auch kältesten Seen Bayerns. Er liegt im Landschaftsschutzgebiet „Alpsee, Schwansee und Faulenbacher Tal“, direkt unter den beiden Königsschlössern Hohenschwangau und Neuschwanstein. Eigentümer des Alpsees ist der Wittelsbacher Ausgleichsfonds.

Baden darf man im Strandbad am Südufer des Sees. Der See wird von unterirdischen Quellen gespeist und verschafft an heißen Sommertagen echte Abkühlung. Schon König Ludwig II. liebte diesen See in ganz besonderem Maß. Von ihm, der ein sehr guter Schwimmer war, sagt man, dass er den ganzen See in seiner vollen Länge durchschwamm. Die Badeanstalt liegt etwa 10 Gehminuten vom Parkplatz entfernt. Es gib einen Bootsverleih für Ruder- und Tretboote und vom Ufer aus darf geangelt werden (hauptsächlich Hecht, Forelle, Zander, Karpfen, Renke, Aal und Barsch). Gefischt werden darf nur mit Angelschein. Infos gibt es bei der Tourist Information Schwangau.

Um den See herum führen wunderschöne, aussichtsreiche Wanderwege. Fast überall wandelt man auf königlichen Spuren. Auf einem dieser Wege gelangt man nach ca. 1 Stunde Fußmarsch ab Hohenschwangau in das benachbarte Tirol. Vom Schloss Neuschwanstein biete sich dem Besucher ein sensationeller Blick auf den Alpsee.

Besonderheiten: Der Alpsee wurde erstmals 2008 bei der EU gemeldet. Die erste EU- Einstufung erfolgt anhand der Ergebnisse der Badesaison 2008 am Ende der Badesaison.
