In einer flachen Senke, an den Quellen der Singold liegt der Ort Waal, der im Jahr 1444 das Marktrecht von Kaiser Friedrich III erhielt.
Hier wurde am 26.05.1849 der berühmte Portraitmaler Professor Hubert Ritter von Herkomer geboren.
Überregional bekannt ist Waal als ältester Passionsspielort in Bayerisch Schwaben und durch die beliebten Kunsthandwerker- und Adventsmärkte.
