The ‘Wilde Sau’ (Wild Sow) is a stone cross that was erected in the Thuringian Forest in 1483 – the year of Martin Luther’s birth. It depicts a hunter riding on a sow who seems to be trying to free his hunting companion from a tight spot using his outstretched spear.

It is highly likely to a penitence cross that was erected by a Weimar servant who accidently stabbed his master during a hunt whilst trying to free him. The ‘Wilde Sau’ is the oldest dated stone cross on the Rennsteig Trail and from here, you have a wonderful view of Wartburg Castle.
