The Gerstfeldhöhe fortification was built in 1936 as one of the largest fortifications of the Westwall (also known as the Siegfried Line). Over 60 years later, it is the largest surviving structure of the Westwall, with a total length of about 14 km. The Westwall Museum presents an impressive collection of wartime artifacts, a weapons chamber, and several larger exhibits, such as an anti-aircraft gun, motorcycles, and large trucks, on a 1000-meter-long underground tour. A faithful reconstruction of a soldiers' barracks is also on display. On the walls of the tunnels, comments and messages written by American soldiers during the war can still be read.
