Weil die Trinkwasserversorgung aus den beiden öffentlichen Brunnen auf dem Marktplatz den gesetzlichen Anforderungen nicht mehr entsprach, gab 1896 der damalige Bürgermeister Sandkuhl den Bau einer neuen Wasserversorgungsanlage in Auftrag. Der Wasserturm, das wohl markanteste Wahrzeichen Kirchbergs, wurde 1899 „Auf der Schied“ errichtet und im August 1900 zusammen mit dem Wasserwerk in Betrieb genommen. Das 1907 neben dem Wasserturm errichtete Elektrizitätswerk wurde 1989 abgerissen. Der 36 m hohe Wasserturm hat einen achteckigen Wasserbehälter, der in Stahlfachwerk ausgeführt ist, mit Zeltdach und Lüftungsaufsatz. Das Fassungsvermögen des Wasserbassins beträgt 120 cbm. Durch den Bau einer Druckerhöhungsanlage im Jahr 2000 wurde der Wasserturm für die Wasserversorgung der Stadt entbehrlich.
