Anyone who today takes the path from the Catholic parish office to the so-called Rollgraben will soon come across the Ulrich Tower.
It is the last remaining fortification tower in Göllheim. In the early 15th century, a local fortification with a ditch, five towers, and two gates was built around Göllheim to protect the town: Besides the Ulrich Tower, there was the "Barbara Tower" (located about 100 meters northwest of the Ulrich Tower), the "Rupsleder Tower" (on the present Freiherr-vom-Stein-Straße, south of the Dreisen Gate), and the "Tower at the Cemetery" (at the corner of Dr.-Fritz-Eidt-Straße), as well as another tower on today's Weedgasse. The Ulrich Tower is a three-story round tower made of red sandstone of different sizes. In the lower part, the masonry is pierced by seven loopholes (alternating between muzzle and keyhole loops), in the upper part by a keyhole loop and a pointed arch window. The tower is topped with an arc frieze. An exact construction date cannot be determined for the Ulrich Tower, but a rough temporal assignment to the first half of the 15th century is possible through the loopholes: There are keyhole loops in the shape of an inverted keyhole and horizontally placed muzzle loops. These indicate the use of both crossbows and firearms, which became increasingly common during the 15th century. The construction type - a round tower as part of a fortification - was common until around 1500. The Ulrich Tower likely would not have withstood a siege by troops, as a hill rises on the field side behind the tower. The fortification was probably intended more as protection against plunderers. In the 1960s, the Ulrich Tower was in danger of collapsing and was stabilized with an internal concrete corset. Since the summer of 1989, the Ulrich Tower has had a roof again: the conical shape is based on historical models.
