Bis 1987 befand sich ca. 600 m südwestlich der Lauschhütte ein flacher Hügel, der wegen
seiner auffalligen Form als prähistorischer Grabhügel oder auch als Rest eines römischen
Wachturms an der Römerstraße Bingen-Rheinböllen- Trier ("Ausoniusstraße") angesprochen wurde.
Die infolge von Raubgrabungen notwendig gewordene archäologische Plangrabung durch
die Landesarchäologie Mainz im Jahr 1987 führte zur Freilegung eines Mauerquadrats von
9x9 m (30x30 röm. Fuß), das an der Südseite eine besonders große Türöffnung von 2,60
m Breite aufweist. Im Inneren fanden sich im Stampflehmboden verschiedene Amphorenstandlöcher sowie eine gemauerte HerdsteIle. Exakt in der Mitte des Raumes konnte ein Pfostenloch erkannt werden, das von der das Dach tragenden Mittelstütze stammen dürfte.
Zugleich könnte ein an ihr gebrachter Querarm zur Aufnahme des Kesselhakens über der
Feuerstelle gedient haben. Die über das pfostenloch erschlossene Mittelstütze deutet ein Pyramidendach an, wobei die Höhe des Gebäudes unklar bleibt. Die Wände könnten aus Vollmauerwerk bestanden haben, Fachwerk wäre aber auch denkbar.
Alle erkannten Baudetails machen die Deutung des Bauwerks als Wachturm  unwahrscheinlich. Viel eher passen alle Erkenntnisse zu einem wirtschaftlich genutzten Nebengebäude einer land-/waldwirtschaftlichen Anlage.
Die gefundenen Gefaßscherben wie auch ein Denar des Kaisers Severus Alexander weisen
auf eine Nutzungszeit im 2. und 3. Jahrhundert n.Chr. hin. Die FundsteIle wurde in einer Gemeinschaftsarbeit der Verbandsgemeinde Rhein-Nahe, der Stadt Bingen und der Gemeinde Weiler bei Bingen gesichert und hergerichtet.
