For decades the station served as the main gateway to the capital. International trains linked Belgrade with cities such as Vienna, Budapest, and Istanbul, placing the city on major rail routes between Central Europe and the Balkans. During the era of Yugoslavia, the station became one of the busiest railway hubs in the region.
The station’s location was particularly convenient. It stood near the historic centre of Belgrade, only about a ten-minute walk from Knez Mihailova Street, the city’s main pedestrian avenue and commercial heart.
In 2018 the station closed as part of a large-scale redevelopment of Belgrade’s waterfront area. Rail services were transferred to the new Belgrade Centre Railway Station (often called Prokop). Although no longer functioning as a railway terminal, the historic building remains an important architectural landmark reflecting the era when rail travel shaped the growth of modern Belgrade.
