Clay from the Rhine plain was used as early as the age of polished stone. In 1850, 30 villages of the Lower Rhine were still dedicated to this activity. Only two centres remain today: Betschdorf and Soufflenheim. If the coloured pottery of Soufflenheim is used for cooking, the grey pots with cobalt blue decorations of Betschdorf are used to preserve food (oil, lard, gherkins, cabbage, eggs).
