Der Kirchplatz erweist seinem Namen alle Ehre: Mit zwei Kirchen und einer Kapelle stehen gleich drei Gotteshäuser an dem Ort. Die Ölbergkapelle zeugt als ehemaliges Beinhaus von dem einstigen Friedhofsareal inmitten der Stadt.
Die Nikolaikirche, seit der Reformation im 16. Jahhundert evangelisch, und die ehemalige Klosterkirche St. Georg und Jakobus begrenzen den Platz im Norden und Osten. Sie versinnbildlichen die Konflikte, die zwischen evangelischer Bürgerschaft und katholischen Ordensbrüdern über Jahrhunderte bestanden.
