Today's Celtic ring wall was formed from the overflowed remains of the former 8.5 km long imposing Celtic wall, which surrounded a large Celtic city (lat. Oppidum) on the Donnersberg from about 130 to 60/50 BC. It was the central place for the entire surrounding area in the Rhine plain. Situated in a dominant position above the Rhine valley, this city was one of the largest Celtic settlements north of the Alps.
While the eastern part of the area was inhabited at times by several thousand people, the western half remained undeveloped. In the last construction phase during the Latène period settlement, the settlement area in the eastern part was reduced by the installation of an "intermediate rampart". In the section of the intermediate rampart, the archaeologists of the Directorate of Regional Archaeology - Speyer have opened "windows" into the interior of the rampart in order to make the original wall visible and to clarify how the former wall was constructed.
The Celtic ring wall can best be explored on the almost 5 km long hike along the Celtic Trail.
