The Heidenmauer is the remains of a Celtic ring wall built around 500 BC that protected what was perhaps the oldest town in the Palatinate. Accessible via the Pfälzer Weinsteig (Palatinate Wine Trail) or the "Panroamarrundwanderweg Drachenfelsclub".
The wall itself consisted of a wooden framework constructed of vertical posts and horizontal crossbeams and filled without mortar with quarry stones whose smooth sides formed the outer wall. The spaces in between were largely closed by sand. Since the wooden parts have disappeared except for small remains (hence the technical term "post slotted wall"), the height of the intact wall can only be indirectly inferred from the mass.
The ring wall has a total length of 2.5 km and covers an area of 26 ha. The distance from the northernmost point to the southernmost corner is about 700 m, from the westernmost to the easternmost corner about 600 m. The ground plan of the enclosure has the shape of a wall. The ground plan of the site is in the shape of an arch with the string stretched to the shot. The arch extends from west to north to east, the chord forming an almost right-angled point to the south. Where the arch and chord meet in the east at the lowest point of the complex (260 m), there was a gate about 7 m wide with a gateway about 9 m long, which still has two "lanes" separated by a row of stones. It was probably provided with a wooden superstructure.
Remains of utilitarian objects suggest that the settlement was extensive. Rich pottery finds allow a very precise dating. Iron cutting knives were also found, as well as "Napoleon hats", pyramid-shaped stones that were stuck into the ground with the point facing downwards to serve as a base for grinding grain. There was also evidence of dairy farming and iron smelting.
