Deveci Han is a 15th-century Ottoman caravanserai located in the Çavuşbey district of Edirne. Originally built for storing official documents and archives, it later served as a prison during the 19th and early 20th centuries. Today, it has been restored and is used for cultural and administrative purposes.
Deveci Han was constructed in the 15th century during the early Ottoman period and initially functioned as a storage facility for official books and archival materials. Its robust and enclosed architectural design reflects its original purpose of safeguarding important state documents. As Edirne developed as a major administrative centre of the Ottoman Empire, such structures played a key role in supporting bureaucratic organisation and governance.
In 1847, the building was converted into a prison under the direction of Rüstem Pasha’s administrative influence, a function it retained until 1953. Following a long period of disuse, the structure underwent restoration in 2000. It now serves a cultural role, housing administrative offices for the Directorate of Culture as well as hosting craft workshops and cultural events. This adaptive reuse has allowed the building to remain an active part of Edirne’s historic urban fabric while preserving its architectural integrity.
