Between 1961 and 1990, Checkpoint Charlie was an inner-German border crossing at Friedrichstraße. The Allied checkpoint was the third of its kind and was therefore marked with a "C" - C for Charlie. Here, military personnel, diplomats and their relatives could move back and forth between Berlin Mitte and Berlin Kreuzberg, provided they had the appropriate passport documents.
The original checkpoint was dismantled in June 1990 and reconstructed to be presented in the Berlin Allied Museum. The monument, which has stood on the site since 2000, is a faithful replica of the original - and one of the most popular sights in downtown Berlin.
