The Caravanserai in Harmanli is the remains of a large 16th-century Ottoman roadside inn that once served caravans travelling through the Maritsa Valley. Built around 1520, it played a key role in trade and travel between Plovdiv and Edirne. Today, only fragments survive, but the site remains an important historical landmark linked to the origins of the town itself.
The caravanserai is believed to have been constructed in the early 16th century as a major resting point for merchants, travellers, and caravans moving along the strategic route between Haskovo and Edirne. According to historical accounts, the settlement of Harmanli developed around this “han”, which gave the town its name. The construction is traditionally attributed to large-scale coordinated labour involving communities from across the region, reflecting the importance of the route within the Ottoman transport network.

The original structure was substantial, featuring multiple sections including a central courtyard approximately 25 metres in diameter, surrounded by wings measuring around 45 by 25 metres. A fountain provided fresh water in the courtyard, while stables and service areas accommodated horses, mules, and camels. The complex was later damaged and largely destroyed in the 19th century, particularly around 1866, after which its stone materials were reused for infrastructure projects such as roads and bridges. Today, remnants of brickwork and foundations remain visible near the modern parking area by Hotel Hebros, offering a tangible link to Harmanli’s commercial past.

Public transport

Harmanli is accessible by regular intercity buses from Sofia, Plovdiv, and Haskovo, as the town does not have a railway station. The central bus stop connects directly with the town centre and nearby attractions. From there, the caravanserai site can be reached on foot within a short walk through central Harmanli.

Directions

From Svoboda Square in Harmanli, head towards the Hebros Hotel area along streets leading to the Harmanliyska River. The caravanserai remains are located near the hotel parking lot, close to ul. Marin Velev and the river corridor. The site is easily accessible on foot within a few minutes from the town centre.

Parking

Parking is available at and around the Hotel Hebros parking area, which is directly adjacent to the archaeological remains. Additional public parking spaces can be found on nearby streets in central Harmanli. As this is a central location, availability may vary during peak hours, but parking is generally easier here than in narrower residential streets.
