Fortified between 1685 and 1689 by the famous architect Vauban, the Citadelle of Blaye, along with Fort Pâté and Fort Médoc on the UNESCO World Heritage List under the name "Verrou Vauban". This defensive triptych is unique in France
In the 17th century, one of King Louis XIV's priorities was to prevent enemy invasions from reaching Bordeaux via the Gironde Estuary.
The architect Vauban was therefore given the task of building a veritable defensive arsenal on the Estuary. The Citadelle de Blaye, Fort Pâté and Fort Médoc, these three forts lined up in a row could cross fire and block all passage. Only the Citadelle de Blaye and Fort Cussac (located in Cussac-Fort-Médoc, in the Médoc) can be visited.
Fort Pâté can be seen from the Gironde Estuary during a boat trip.
