The Ancient Stadium of Philippopolis is one of the most impressive Roman monuments in Plovdiv. Built in the 2nd century AD during the reign of Emperor Hadrian, it once hosted large-scale athletic competitions and public events. Today, a partially preserved section is visible beneath the modern city, integrated into Plovdiv’s central pedestrian area.
The Ancient Stadium was constructed in the early 2nd century AD, most likely under Emperor Hadrian, when Philippopolis was one of the major cities of the Roman province of Thrace. Inspired by the model of the Stadium of Delphi, it was designed for athletic competitions such as running events, wrestling, and other public spectacles. The stadium measured approximately 240 metres in length and could accommodate tens of thousands of spectators, making it one of the largest Roman structures of its kind in the Balkans.

Today, only a portion of the northern end of the stadium is visible, as much of the structure lies beneath modern Plovdiv. The exposed section is located under and around the main pedestrian street, where visitors can view the stone seating tiers, entrance passages (vomitoria), and parts of the curved arena structure. The site is integrated into the urban landscape, with modern buildings constructed above and around the ancient remains, allowing the stadium to be experienced as part of everyday city life.

The Ancient Stadium is part of Plovdiv’s rich archaeological heritage, alongside the Roman Theatre, basilicas, and fortifications. It reflects the city’s importance as a major urban centre in the Roman Empire and remains one of the most visited historical attractions in Bulgaria.

Public transport

Plovdiv is served by frequent train and bus connections from Sofia, Burgas, Varna, and other major Bulgarian cities. The stadium is located directly beneath the central pedestrian street and is easily accessible on foot from all parts of the city centre.

Directions

The stadium is situated under ul. "Hristo G. Danov" and the main pedestrian zone in central Plovdiv. Visitors typically encounter it while walking along the city’s main shopping street, where the preserved seating sections are visible at street level and through dedicated viewing points.

Parking

Parking is limited in the central pedestrian area. Visitors are advised to use nearby public parking garages and continue on foot. Several paid parking facilities are available within a short walking distance of the stadium.
