The rectangular-shaped Neuer Platz is the central city square of Klagenfurt am Wörthersee, in whose center the Lindwurm stands as a landmark and coat of arms animal of the city.
The square was created in the second half of the 16th century when the estates had their new Renaissance city built south of the medieval one. They also commissioned the Lindwurm monument, which recalls the origins of the city according to the founding legend: Furt der "Klagen" = Klagenfurt.
In 1593, the 124 quintals heavy work made of chlorite schist was said to have been pulled to Neuer Platz by 300 youths dressed in white from the nearby Kreuzberg.
In 1636, the sculpture was expanded to the Lindwurm Fountain with basin, swinging mace Hercules, and Renaissance grid. The fountain once supplied the city with drinking and extinguishing water.
On the square, there is also the Maria Theresa Memorial, which was designed on the occasion of Maria Theresa's visit in 1765.
For the UEFA European Football Championship 2008, the square was redesigned according to the plans of architect Boris Podrecca. Dark granite slabs form the elegant "carpet" for the Lindwurm fountain.
