A natural monument of extraordinary fascination: a narrow gorge with metre-high rock faces, cool and dark. Cracks and crevices, weathered and overgrown with mosses and lichens. Anyone walking through this eye of a needle in the sandstone is walking through a 200-million-year-old seabed that harbours many secrets.
Narrow gorges and slender rock crevices, covered with moss and lichen, giant rock towers, massive stone blocks with bizarre weathering forms – a wild, primordial landscape shapes the Ferschweiler Plateau and its surroundings.
At the end of the last ice age - about 12,000 years ago - the alternation of frost and thaw periods led to tremendous rock falls at the edge of the high plateau. A large sandstone block toppled out of the plateau wall at that time, opening a rock crevice that is now 28 meters deep, captivating anyone who has walked through it: the Devil's Gorge.
But the fascinating story of its formation is not yet fully told. It begins with a sea that spread out here 190 million years ago. Today, those who hike through the Devil's Gorge in the Rockland South Eifel are walking in the midst of an ancient, stone-turned seabed.
Hiking routes
A tour through the Devil's Gorge is a must for every hiker in the Rockland, and a nature experience that is unforgettable. Named after the Devil's Gorge, the 17 km long premium hiking trail "Felsenweg 6" of the Nature Hiking Park delux. Three other marked circular hiking paths between 2 and 6 km long lead through the gorge and up and down narrow paths through the rocks: The Little and the Big Circular Trail of the Devil's Gorge and the Devilish Eight. This fantastically beautiful hiking route connects the Devil's Gorge with the Irrel Waterfalls, the rapids of the Prüm, over which a suspension bridge has been leading since September 2023.
At the Nature Park Center Devil's Gorge an exhibition provides information about the formation and characteristics of the fascinating rock landscape. The bistro "Devil's Kitchen" invites you to take a break on the sun terrace. Numerous environmental education and nature experience programs for children and adults can be booked at the Nature Park Center.
Tip for families: In close proximity is the Dinosaur Park Devil's Gorge - a must for anyone interested in earth history and the origin of life!
