This here is the river of Pertouli, followed by many folk stories.

Pertouli is surrounded and protected by the mountains of Pindos range.

Between them is lying the large plateau of Pertouliotika Livadia (meadows of Pertouli) which is crossed by Pertouliotikos or Xerias river, a tributary of Aspros (Acheloos), which in its flow outlines meandering shapes, the "klouria", as locals call them. Its riverbed is in large sections wide, forming sandy islets, with thick white round smooth stones, as well as dark large slabs (flat one-piece rocks) in the narrower places, yaking strange natural shapes.

The sandy places are overgrown with willows and plane trees. Its waters host trouts, dandelions, eels, frogs, water snakes, european bitterlings etc. The shores are covered with shrubs and aromatic plants.

The various birds - blackbirds, swallows, hummingbirds, wild pigeons and many more - come and go happily, dip their noses in the water or hide scared in the river bushes and forest trees, trying to escape from the lurking accipiters.

"Fairies of Pertouli": "In Pertouli, the Fairies or "Kalomires" or "Kalotyches" come out of the caves and the forest in the evening and with a few jumps they go down to the river. With the gargling waters of the depths of the river, they bathe, wash their long golden-green braids, light fires, spin wool using marble spindle whorl and fairy spindle whorl, and then they sing, play instruments and dance until dawn. Their violins and drums are heard all night.

[The old women Rodo Batziou and Peristero Papacharalambous, over 100 years old each, who have been dead for 30 years now, said that they saw Fairies many times at the bottom of the river and heard the instruments they played. Old man Mitsos Karanikolos, said that one morning at dawn, he found in the river, a fairy apple made by the Fairies, with their hair. The Fairy apple was used by the villagers to cure the sick, to ward off the evil eye and spells.] ”(Alex. K. Hatzigaki, Traditions of Aspropotamos, Trikala, 1948, p. 116, no. 234 ).
