Die fruchtbare Hochfläche der Wahlener Platte wird aus dem harten Gestein des Unteren Muschelkalks gebildet. Darunter lagert der relativ weichere Buntsandstein. Im Umfeld der Wahlener Platte hat das fließende Wasser über Jahrtausende Schluchten und enge Kerbtäler aus dem Gestein ausgewaschen. Diese werden im Volksmund "Gräten" genannt, von denen sich rund um Rissenthal mehr als 10 finden lassen. Die hier aufgeschlossenen Felswände bieten einen beeindruckenden Einblick in die Geologie der Region.

Durch das besonders feucht-schattige Klima finden sich in den Gräten auch eine ganze Reihe bemerkenswerter Tier- und Pflanzenarten, wie etwa der seltene Winterschachtelhalm. Mit etwas Glück kann man an einem der vielen Waldbäche auch den Feuersalamander beobachten.
