The Eistobel is a picturesque gorge of the river Argen, located between Ebratshofen and Maierhöfen in the Upper Allgäu. Rushing waterfalls and deep swirling holes, huge boulders and immense rock faces are characteristic there.

A secured walking path leads for about 3.5 km through the nature reserve, where you can marvel at the mighty water spectacles as well as rare animal and plant species. The Eistobel is a popular destination on warm summer days, because in some places you can venture into the cold water.

The Eistobel was formed around 15,000 years ago when a lake of meltwater was deposited in the basin near Ebratshofen towards the end of the last ice age. Over the following millennia, the drainage channel deepened more and more, creating one of the most beautiful geotopes in Bavaria. At the points where harder and softer sedimentary layers met, the water created swirl holes, waterfalls and cascades. Some of the pools are over 5 m deep and contain dangerous currents in their depths. Swimming and bathing in the deep pools is therefore prohibited. Because the whirlpools here pull even experienced swimmers into the depths.

In winter, the Eistobel is a very special experience. The freezing water forms bizarre ice formations that are especially beautiful after prolonged frost. It should be noted, however, that the Eistobel is officially closed during the cold season and the path is not maintained. Good hiking boots, and even dodgers or crampons are therefore strongly recommended.
