Der Gimpelstein, eine mächtige Felsgruppe hoch über Calw, gehört stratigraphisch in die Geröllsandstein-Formation (SMG) des Mittleren Buntsandstein.
Es handelt sich um eine große tafelförmige Felsformation, stark zerklüftet und aufgrund unterschiedlich harter Partien des Gesteins mit Überhängen und Nischen. Schrägschichtung und andere Sedimentstrukturen sind deutlich erkennbar. Von der Felsgruppe hat man einen weiten Blick über Calw und das Nagoldtal.
