The deepest cavity in the Portuguese karst environment is the Palopes Pothole, located near the western border of Santo António Plateau. It was named in honour of the AESDA member Paulo Lopes, who relocalised it during an exploration in December 2010. Still being explored, it is already more than 260 metres deep. Until 2010, the deepest known cavity was Alecrineiros Pothole, at around -220 metres, discovered and explored by the French team from Societé Spéléo Archéologique de Caussade.
