Upper gate

The Upper Gate in Rechberghausen is an important testimony to the town's medieval history and part of the oldest surviving buildings in the small town, which was first mentioned in 1329. Together with the surrounding buildings, it forms a particularly picturesque corner that still reflects the historical character of the town today. Of the original three town gates, the Upper Gate is the only one that has survived to the present day - and also the only one in the entire district of Göppingen.

Its history is closely linked to the former town fortifications. In 1587, there was still a wall in the immediate vicinity that was part of the defensive system. The course of the former town moat can still be traced when leaving the town through the gate on the left-hand side, even though it is now partially filled in. These structures give a vivid impression of how the town was once secured.

The castle of Duke Friedrich von Teck, mentioned as early as 1366, probably stood in the immediate vicinity. It is assumed that the remains of this former fortification are still concealed in today's building. The Oberes Tor also served as an official residence for a long time and fulfilled important manorial functions until 1651.

Today, the building is privately owned and used as a residence. Despite this conversion, the Upper Gate has lost none of its historical charm and remains an impressive relic of bygone times that brings history to life in the townscape.
