Oberwälden bakery

The Oberwälden bakery looks back on a long history: the building was erected back in 1877 - originally as a combination of a bakery, laundry and milk house. The right-hand side was used for baking, while the villagers washed their laundry in the left-hand part. Later, a milk house was added to the left, where the milk from local farmers was collected and processed. Where the courtyard is today, there was once a bet, a small pond that served as a watering place for cattle and a reservoir for fire-fighting water.

Today, the bakehouse is owned by the municipality of Wangen and has been looked after by the Oberwälden village community since September 2025. In addition to baking for village festivals and the popular Oberwälder Christmas market, the aim is to preserve and pass on traditional baking knowledge.

The bakery is to be used regularly again in future - both by experienced bakers and by anyone interested in learning about the craft for the first time. New baking dates will be offered after the upcoming renovation work, which will be carried out in consultation with the municipality and the heritage office.

The Oberwälden bakery will thus remain a lively place to meet, enjoy and learn about village history - a piece of living tradition in the heart of the village.
