Historisches Gasthaus "Zum Rössel"

At the beginning of the 20th century, the Rössels comprised three separate buildings. It was not until 1907 that these were connected by a classicist annex.
Today, two of the original buildings are still clearly visible: a half-timbered structure built in the 18th century to the north, and a younger building to the south, constructed in the 19th century as its counterpart.

A beautifully inscribed date on a beam of the older building notes that Johann Jakob Roth and his wife Maria Margarete had this house built in 1761. The property was then located outside the development boundary on the road to Lauterburg. In 1764, Roth is mentioned in the birth record of his daughter as "Butcher and Innkeeper at the Rössels." In the 19th century, Heinrich Rothhaas, a member of the well-known Kandel postal family, was the innkeeper at the Rössels.
For a long time, the Rössels was the gathering place in Kandel, where all notable visitors stayed. In its guest room, the "Vorschuss-Verein" was founded in 1872, a predecessor of today's VR Bank South Palatinate and at that time the first banking house in the South Palatinate.
