Lyutitsa Fortress is one of the largest and best-preserved medieval castles in the Eastern Rhodope Mountains. Known for its distinctive white marble construction, it is often called the “Marble City.” The fortress occupies a strategic hilltop position overlooking the surrounding valleys near Ivaylovgrad.
Lyutitsa Fortress is a major medieval stronghold located in the far eastern part of the Rhodope Mountains. Built and developed over several centuries, it became an important defensive and administrative centre controlling routes through the region. The fortress is especially notable for its unusually well-preserved white marble walls, a rare feature among Bulgarian medieval fortifications, which has earned it the nickname “Marble City.”
The complex includes extensive fortification walls, towers, and the remains of residential and religious structures, reflecting its long period of occupation and strategic importance. Archaeological evidence suggests that Lyutitsa functioned not only as a military fortress but also as a local settlement with ecclesiastical elements. Its elevated position provided excellent visibility over the surrounding terrain, making it a key defensive point in the Eastern Rhodopes. Today, it is considered one of the most significant medieval archaeological sites in the region.
