During the struggles between the Serbian Despotate, the Ottoman Empire, and the Kingdom of Hungary, the fortress changed hands several times. Ottoman forces temporarily occupied it in 1413 and 1427, while Hungarian and Serbian rulers later regained control before the city finally fell to Sultan Mehmed II in 1454. Under Ottoman rule, Kruševac became known as Aladža Hisar, meaning “Colourful City”, due to the varied materials used in the fortress walls. Although much of the original complex was damaged over time, important remains survive, including sections of defensive walls and the nearby Lazarica Church, which was founded by Prince Lazar and later converted by the Ottomans into a gunpowder store. Today, the site is protected as a Monument of Culture of Exceptional Importance and remains central to the historical identity of Kruševac.
