Krivus Fortress is a medieval stronghold from the 10th century located on a steep hill above a bend of the Arda River in the Rhodope Mountains. The site preserves remains of defensive walls, towers, and a central citadel. Its dramatic river-surrounded position makes it one of the most impressive fortress ruins in the region.
Krivus Fortress was constructed in the 10th century during the First Bulgarian Empire, occupying a naturally defensive rocky hill surrounded on almost all sides by the Arda River. This strategic location allowed the fortress to control movement along the river valley and serve as a defensive and administrative stronghold in the medieval Rhodopes. Its name is associated with the fortified network that protected trade routes and regional settlements during the Middle Ages.
Archaeological remains show well-preserved sections of the fortress walls, some reaching up to 5 metres, along with parts of defensive towers and the citadel structure, where walls rise to approximately 6 metres. Excavations have uncovered coins, weapon fragments, and Christian symbols, indicating continuous occupation and religious activity within the fortress. A small church once stood within the central area, although only ruins remain today. The fortress also featured an advanced water supply system, including an underground tunnel connecting directly to the Arda River, ensuring access during sieges.
Public transport
Bashevo and the wider Arda River valley region are accessible by regional bus services from Ardino and Kardzhali, which are connected to larger Bulgarian cities such as Plovdiv. However, public transport to smaller villages in the area is limited and infrequent. From Ardino, onward travel towards Bashevo typically requires a taxi or private transport.Directions
From Ardino, travellers should follow the road along the Arda River valley towards Bashevo village. Near Bashevo, access to the fortress requires leaving the main road and following a marked trail uphill to the hilltop site. The final section is on foot and involves a moderate climb through forested terrain.Parking
Parking is available near the access road in Bashevo village, typically as informal roadside spaces. From the parking area, visitors must continue on foot to reach the fortress. Space is limited but generally sufficient due to the low visitor density compared to major tourist sites.Coordinates
