Early on, Ludwig recognized the unique location of the limestone structure and envisioned a castle larger and grander than Hohenschwangau, set amidst the picturesque Alpsee. Neuschwanstein's majestic perch amidst the mountains makes it an unparalleled attraction.
Inspired by medieval themes, the castle was an ambitious project involving stage designers, architects, and craftsmen who worked tirelessly for years to bring Ludwig's dream world to life.
Since 1886, the castle has been open to the public year-round, offering tours that must be booked at the ticket center in Hohenschwangau. For barrier-free tours, please make arrangements in advance.
