Discover this landmark of Cathar history, the last refuge of the Bonshommes in the 12th century.
Standing at an altitude of 1207m, on the highest part of a rocky spur called a pog, Montségur castle is mentioned in texts as early as the end of the 12th century. However, the first evidence of human occupation on this mountain dates back to around four thousand years BC.
In the early 13th century, the Cathars, followers of a dualist religion declared heretical by the Pope, settled here.In 1232, the château became the headquarters of the Cathar church and a refuge for the faidits, local lords dispossessed of their property by the crusade.
While the Languedoc region was set on fire, Montségur lived in relative peace for over 40 years.
Finally, in 1243, the Pope and the King of France decided to put an end to Montségur.
On March 16, 1244, after a terrible 11-month siege, the Cathars were led to the stake, where over 200 of them were burned alive.
Catharism never recovered from the loss of Montségur, and disappeared completely in the early 14th century.
