Die Mittelburg ist im Privatbeitz und kann nicht besichtigt werden. Sie wurde wahrscheinlich von einem Buder des Minnesängers zwischen 1170 und 1200 gebaut, hat aber heute ihren ursprünglich ebenfalls wehrhaften Charakter völlig verloren. Die zunächst nur aus einem mächtigen Bergfried und einer kleinen Kernburg bestehende Anlage hatte ständig neue Bestizer der Steinacher. Dann baute Landschad Hans Bleikard sie zu einem Renaissanceschloss nach dem Vorbild des Heidelberger Schlosses um. Dabei verschwand auch die Zugbrücke und ein Teil der Zwingermauer. Nach dem Aussterben der Landschaden lebten hier 100 Jahre lang die Freiherren von Metternich. Nach dem Übergang an Hessen ging das Erbe an die Freiherren von Dorth, die eine Gotisierung der Burg vornahmen, d.h. sie mit Zinnen und kleinen Türmchen dekorierten. Seit 1943 gehört die Mittelburg den Freiherren von Warsberg; und heute lebt hier Johannes Freiherr von Warsberg mit seiner siebenköpfigen Familie.
