Sie liegt 240 Meter über dem Elbspiegel und bietet einen hervorragenden Blick über die gesamte Region. Der 1241 erstmals urkundlich erwähnte Königstein wurd ab 1589 zur Landesfestung ausgebaut, die als uneinnehmbar galt. Einem ernsthaften Angriff musste die Festung, die als Ort höfischer Repräsentation und als Staatsgefängnis genutzt wurde, allerdings nie standhalten. Die bekanntesten Gefangenen waren der Miterfinder des europäischen Porzellans Johann Friedrich Böttger, der Dichter Frank Wedekind und der Sozialdemokrat August Bebel. Heute kann man in der Festung mehrere Ausstellungen besuchen.
