In the island's capital St. Helier, the impressive Elizabeth Castle was built, one of the best-preserved fortresses in Europe. The castle is perched on a rocky island in the bay of St. Aubin, directly opposite St. Helier.
St Helier is a bustling cosmopolitan port town with a diverse local culture. The small island capital was named after Saint Helier, who lived here as a hermit and martyr (in 555). The castle is cut off from the mainland twice a day by the tides, then you can only get there by amphibious vehicle. Otherwise, you can walk to the site (approx. 750m).
St Helier is a capital with many facets and everything is close together here. From the cool food scene with street food and Michelin star restaurants to the shopping district with its very own character or the marina with its beautiful restaurants with sea views. Definitely worth a visit are the colourful Central Market and Beresford Fish Market in the heart of St Helier.
