Középkori vár romjait rejti a Cserépváralja felett magasodó dombtető, mellette sziklába vájt gabonatároló üregeket, kápolnát, de még egy ipari műemlék trafóállomást is találunk.

Feltehetően a 14. század végén épült a Bükkalja egyik tufasziklás kiemelkedésére a Cserépvárként ismert kővár, aminek romjai részben még ma is láthatók. A hegytető legmagasabb kiemelkedésén több várfalat és mélyedést, valamint terasz jellegű földrendezést észlelhetünk, de két sánc részleges maradványait is megtekinthetjük. A várhoz vezető út is jól kirajzolódik, amint a csúcsot nyugatról kerülve az északi-északkeleti oldalon eléri a falrészleteket.

Cserép vára

A felsővár kb. 35 méter hosszú és 15 méter széles, míg az alsóvár kőfala délnyugat felől képez félköríves védelmi rendszert az alatta húzódó sáncokkal együtt. A várhoz vezető földút két oldalán négyzet alakú lyukak mélyednek a hegy tufás alapkőzetébe, amelyek 5–10 méter magas, 3–6,5 méter széles, boltíves teremben teljesednek ki. A harang alakú termek terménytárolásra szolgálhattak, az egyik legalsó üregbe be is tudunk sétálni az oldalról nyíló kőelőszobából. (És érdemes is, az íves, kupolaszerűvé faragott kőcsarnok egyedi és érdekes látvány.

A vár első említése 1408-ból származik, amikor királynéi tulajdonban állt, majd a 16. század közepén az egri püspök birtokolta. A török hadak többször ostromolták, be is vették, de megtartani nem tudták. Az egri vár 1596-os eleste után török kézre került a Cserépvár is, miután védői harc nélkül elvonultak. Az Oszmán Birodalom része volt egészen 1687-ig, ekkor a külső palánksáncot a császári csapatok felgyújtották, és a török védők feladták a harcot. A 18. század elején kuruc kézen volt, itt tartották fogva az egri püspököt, majd a világosi fegyverletétel után elvesztette stratégiai szerepét.

L’Huillier kastélya

A vár körüli birtokot a L’Huillier család kapta meg, akik a vár kőanyagából kastélyt építtettek az alatta fekvő lapos terepre. A kastélyt már nem láthatjuk, de a melléépült templomot és kútházat még igen – ezek a jelenleg elhagyatott ifjúsági tábor területén találhatók. A templom falán tábla hirdeti, hogy Munkácsy Mihály a kastélyban töltötte gyermekkorát, míg a kőből épült, köríves kútházban egy török korból eredeztethető kút található.

Kilátás sajnos nincs a várból, csak a Cserépvárhoz vezető út szélén nyitott irtásról tekinthetünk szűken nyugat felé, a jellegtelen bükkaljai dombvidékre.
