The Metzger-August chronicle of the town of Wolfach reports that French soldiers attempted to topple the rock onto the Eichenstein saw below during the Second Coalition War (1799-1801). However, they were unsuccessful. In memory of this, the Wolfach Beautification Association erected a cross on the rock for the first time in 1884. This has been renewed several times over the years, most recently in 1974, 1993 and 2005.
The striking stone tower was originally called "Rappenfelsen". This name is often used as a topographical designation in the region, including in the surrounding area. It is derived from the ravens that like to build their nests on them. In southern Germany, the black birds were called "rappe" (Middle High German) or "rappo" (Old High German).
