I’m small, but mighty

There are a variety of willows in the high-mountain environment. Unlike their relatives that live at lower elevations, these specialists employ the “keep your head down and stay tough” strategy. Slow yet steady, these mini trees (such as salix reticulata and salix retusa) invest energy in creating a rich network of stems and branches. As a result, and in spite of their small dimensions, these small trees are capable of covering several square metres of ground, particularly in small snowy valleys that may only be snow-free for two or three months a year. They thrive in scree and play an important role in stabilising the soil around them. Plants can only really survive at the edges of such glaciers if the earth is more or less stable. Otherwise the top soil is liable to wash away with the next rain. Pioneer plants, like both of these willows, play an important role in ensuring such stability.
