The Suomussalmi Prehistoric exhibition is located in Jalonniemi-House, in the premises of the Herkkusuu lunch café - pastry shop. Come and discover the prehistory of Suomussalmi!
The first inhabitants arrived in Suomussalmi just after the last Ice Age, around 8000-7700 BC.
The Vanha VaKirkkosaari (Old Church Island), located in the southern part of Lake Kiantajärvi, is one of the oldest settlements in Finland.
More than 300 prehistoric settlements have been found in the Suomussalmi municipality. Archaeological excavations in Suomussalmi municipality have uncovered many unique artefacts, including a copper axe, which is about 4 000 years old and is the oldest metal tool in Finland.
